GLOSSARY TERMS

Convertible

Convertible sunglasses can be worn as a sunglass or goggle by simply interchanging the supplied temples with the supplied strap. These are available in many styles with different objectives in mind, most commonly used for motorcycle and military applications.

Digital Surfacing

Traditional surfacing typically provides accuracy to 1/12th of a diopter. Digital surfacing provides accuracy to 1/100th of a diopter. Put simply, digital surfacing delivers the crispest, sharpest, most accurate vision possible. Digital surfacing also offers wrap compensation.

Insert

The prescription insert is a small, durable, clear-plastic ophthalmic frame that is mounted into a sunglass frame to hold prescription lenses when the frame cannot accommodate on its own. They are typically held in by special mounts on the frame which makes them removable based on your needs. Inserts are easily concealed behind a flash or solid mirror lens.

Interchangeable

Interchangeable refers to a frame's ability to interchange lenses either by utilizing a lens bezel, which holds the lens for the easiest interchangeability, or by notches that allow the lens to be easily clipped in or out of the frame. Many of our brands have their own proprietary interchangeable technology.

Transitions Drivewear

Transitions Drivewear lenses are a specialized type of Transition Lenses optimized for operation behind a car’s windshield. They are always tinted (sunglasses) and because they are activated by both UV light and available light, they can be activated behind a cars UV filtered windshield. They adjust from their lightest state, allowing about 30% light transmission to a darkest state of 15% light transmission. This means, the brighter the light, the darker the tint. Transitions Drivewear lenses are also polarized so they do a great job of reducing glare. They are not recommended for indoor or nighttime use as they do not get light (clear) enough.

Transitions Signature

Often called Photochromic, or Photo Grey, these lenses change from clear to tinted based on exposure to ultraviolet light. This function makes Transitions Signature Lenses very useful for sports applications. You can have one pair of eyewear to manage almost any lighting condition. However, due to Light Reactive Lenses' reliance on UV light to change, they will not change behind a cars UV filtered windshield (See Transitions Drivewear). For other types of Transitions Lenses see Transitions XTRActive & Transitions Vantage.

Transitions XTRActive

Transitions XTRActive lenses feature the same UV technology as original Transitions lenses. While their clear state has a very light tint, XTRActive lenses reach the darkness of a traditional sunglass, accommodating those that find regular transitions too light. These transition lenses semi-activate behind the windshield of a car, and feature the fastest and darkest Transitions lens.

Transitions Vantage

Transitions Vantage lenses start virtually clear and in the presence of UV light become not only tinted but also polarized. That means that indoors or in your car you will be able to use computer screens and GPS without issue and when outdoors get all of the benefits of a polarized sun lens.

Lined Bi-focal

Lined Bi-focal lenses have the distance prescription on top and the reading prescription on the bottom. They are separated by a defined line. We set our lined bifocals especially low so as not to interfere with your vision while participating in your favorite sport.

Mirror

When customizing your prescription lenses, you will have an option to add a mirror finish. This reflective coating will minimize sunlight and increase general protection level. There are two types of mirror finishes available: Solid or Flash. Solid Mirrors are the most reflective, while the Flash are a bit more subdued.

Optician

An optician is an expert practitioner who fits, designs and dispenses lenses for the correction of one’s vision. At SportRx we know your vision is important. That’s why our experienced opticians have years of knowledge to help you see better while doing what you love.

Polarized

Polarized lenses block glare from ice, water, snow, the road or any shinny surface. Polarized lenses are darker than typical sunglass lenses and offer excellent brightness protection. Polarized lenses are great for all road activities and a must for water-sports.

Premium Anti-Fog

The best defensive against fog. A must-have for ski & snow goggles to help minimize fogging.

Premium Anti-Reflective

Premium Anti-Reflective coating lets more light through the lens which helps reduce glare from headlights and road glare. Indoors it helps with computer screen, tv screens, florescent lights ect.(also see Ultra Premium Anti-Reflective)

Progressive

Progressive lenses provide distance, intermediate, and reading in one lens without lines. These have also been referred to as unlined bifocals or trifocals. All progressive lenses from SportRx are digitally surfaced, insuring the widest reading channels with the least amount of distortion possible. Digital progressives are also sometimes called HD lenses or freeform progressives.

Pupil Distance

Pupil Distance (PD) is the distance between the center of the pupils in each eye. This measurement is key when preparing to make your prescription eyewear. (See Reading your Prescription for additional information).

Wrap Compensation

This is a formula used when processing lenses digitally. We enter all the relevant prescription and frame information into a program, which manufactures the lenses to minimize the distortion caused by wrapping a lens as much as possible.

Ultra Premium Anti-Reflective

Everything you get with Premium Anti-Reflective coating plus an improved anti-scratch coating that is harder to smudge and stays clean longer.
